The left curly bracket { is defined in ASCII as having the value is 123 (hexadecimal $7B). In Pascal it always appears in conjunction with a corresponding right curly bracket constituting a pair. Such a pair is used to:

• write block comments
• FPC and Delphi interpret such comments with an initial dollar sign as compiler directives, for example {$longStrings on}
• integrated development environments such as Lazarus interpret block comments with an initial percent sign as IDE directives, for instance {%H-}
